so i was trying to find a general story to how things go, and i cant find one.
My initial observation would be that this is based around real characters from the book. Is that correct?

hello there shane, welcome to LoA ^_^ I am Guo Ping, but please call me Pinger. Pretty much we just follow what's happened in the books, but more or less you just make it up and have fun. Just follow the rules and whatnot and you'll have fun. Make up your own characters or you can use characters from the book so long as they haven't been taken already.
I do have a bit of warning which I hope will not deter you from using our site. A year or so ago (actually more than that) the site was hacked (before I joined) and we lost a lot of members because the site was basically wiped clean.
We do still have a number of members but there has been discrepancy in their participation. But I am online consistently. I sign on at least once a day and if I can't there is usually only a small interval of time when I am not online. One of the Mods is also on fairly consistently, Sora, who can approve your characters and Alagron is as well.

How unfortunate. I prefer Rp's that avoid interaction with existing characters. My next question is do new characters start at around, or before they get an egg? or do people start as a trained rider?

There's a ton of OC characters so it'll still be to your preferences somewhat. As for character class, you can't be a rider right off the bat, you gotta earn it. All rider characters need to be approved, but once you are cleared for that you can either make a character who's had their dragon for a while or a new rider.
If I haven't answered your question clearly enough send Sora a PM or use the shoutbox. I'm not a Mod and Sora knows more about this than I do.

Hi there, Shane! Pinger here has already done introductions so we'll toss those out the window. The characters from the novel are still around, just so you're aware. Most threads are set at neutral time so the mods make it a general rule that important threads will take place after 'the war' which basically means Galbatorix is still King, Eragon is still alive and fighting for the Varden and so on. It all depends on the situation, I suppose. Lots of Empire characters use the King as a third character in the story, to advance the plot and we have no problems with that.
If you want to change things up in a post, feel free. We don't want to place many restrictions on our users.
In regards to the dragons, yes, you must earn them. A requirement of at least 50 posts is needed before you can become a rider. At that point, you can just make a dragon to go with your character or do a complete thread with another person to show how you obtained your egg. It's all up to you.
